Media
The social group I have analysed in the fallout analysis clip are inter city teenagers. During the clip, I had come to the impression that the teenagers were being represented as innoccent, deviant, intimidating and trouble making. This is represented by the use of sound techniques, editing, camera work and mis en scene during the clip.
TROUBLE MAKING
The dialogue used by the teens whilst making trouble with the innocent youth is very intimidating and is used to bully the youth. The leader of the group uses words like “blackattack” and “bubu” to describe the youth and represent his culture/background. mis en scene is also used on the physical appearance of the characters. the trouble making teenagers seemed to tower above the young inccent kid which could represensent them as being in control represents them as much more dominant characters. the young thugs could also be represented as being in trouble as it seems that they could be out of school or truancing from school. the fact that the inocent youth is displayed in a school uniform whereas the other groups of teens are wearing normal clothes and are hanging out on the streets. teenagers that hang out on the streets in todays society are also represented by an older audience as trouble making. the area in which the incedent takes place is also very run down and has a number of tower blocks which could represent the teens as being of the lower classed which could reult in them feeling to steal from others to generate money. a motivated shot is used well, towards the end of the clip to show the facial expression of the female member of the group in reaction to what she is whitnessing across the road. a close up shot is used to focus on the shocked and then inncoent facial expression of the female in return to what she is witnessing her freinds doing across the road. the facial expression leads the audience to feel that she is whitnessing her freind making touble across the road. a cutting rythm is also used to build up tension as the group begin to chase the youth. a quickening cutting rythm is used to build tension and make the audience feel that something bad or troubleing is about to happen. The audience also sense that something bad is going to happen by the sound used when the troublesome teens chase the young innocent youth. There is a non-digetic, deep toned instrumental added to the clip which gets louder and deeper as we become more anxious.
INTIMIDATING
the age group represented in the clip, is also shown to be itimidating and is firstly represented like this by the use of a motivated shot to show the inocent teenagers reaction to seeing the group of youths leave the shop. a close up shot is used so that us, the audience, focus on the facial expression displayed by the character.
the facial reaction of the teenager seems to turn from a happy smile to a shocked and scared facial expression which builds up tension and shows that he seems to become scared of the group approaching. this is a motivated shot and shows the youths facial expression into reaction to seeing the group of intimidating youths leave the shop. the group also seem to be much more intimidating when they begin to bully the lonely youth. a mid pov shot is taken from over the shoulders of the group to show the much more powerful, dominant group tower above the youth and look down on him. during this scene, the leader of the group asks the boy "what you got for me". the youth uses common inter city slang relateing to the setting of the scene and comes across as intimidating as he tries to rob the boy. the area in which the clip is filmed is also very run down and represents the teens as lower classed. lower classed teens are represented well here as they are usually sterotyped in todays society as trouble and uncaring. this could result in them bullying and stealing from others. finally, mis en scene is used well to show who the inimidators are during he clip by the use of facial expressions. many of the expressions consist of screwish frowns and angry looking facial expressions. this is represented in a number of close ups.
INNOCENT
Teenagers are also represented and innocent during the clip. a mid shot is used during the scene to show the group of teens approaching the boy in order to make trouble. the facial expression of the innocent teen seems to be quite scared and unconfident at this point.
the group of teenagers in this mid shot, seem to tower above the young teen and shows that he is the less powerful victim in this situation. this represents him to be innocent as there is no reason for him to be victimised. during this scene, the agressors also seem to command space in the screen and the group has more members which could symbolize them as the agressors and the young boy as the innocent victim. sound is also used to represent how the young boy is the innocent character in the clip. at the point in which the aggressors approach the lone youth, we notice that he is more of an innocent character as he is polite and acts as if he is scared of the approaching group. he asks the leader, "come on let me pass dred , please". the youth says this digetic sound in a soft and rather sorry tone which could represent his innocence at the point of the clip.
DEVIANT
The teens also represents the importance of status and show that they are deviant during the clip. They represent this when one of the teens questions the leading aggressor whether he is going to take the disrespect, he asks “ are you just gonna stand there and take that?”.This represents the importance of their status as the leader then feels he must go back and get his own back
